President William Ruto Dissolves Cabinet, Retains Prime Cabinet Secretary

President William Ruto has dissolved his Cabinet, dismissing all Cabinet Secretaries and the Attorney General with immediate effect. This decision does not affect Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi.

“I have decided to dismiss with immediate effect all Cabinet Secretaries and the Attorney General of the Cabinet of Kenya except the Prime Cabinet Secretary and the Cabinet Secretary for Foreign Affairs,” Ruto announced. “And of course, the office of the Deputy President is not affected in any way.”

Ruto stated that the affairs of the Ministries will now be coordinated by Principal Secretaries until a new cabinet is appointed. The President emphasized that the new cabinet will be named following extensive consultations across all sectors.

“I will immediately engage in extensive consultations across different sectors and political formations to set up a broad-based government,” Ruto said. “This government will assist me in accelerating and expediting the necessary, urgent, and irreversible implementation of radical programs to address the burden of debt, raise domestic resources, expand job opportunities, eliminate wastage and unnecessary duplication of government agencies, and tackle corruption. This will consequently make the government lean, inexpensive, effective, and efficient.”

He added that with the Cabinet Secretaries out of office, ministry accounting officers and other officials will now take charge of operations. “The operations of government will continue uninterrupted under the guidance of Principal Secretaries and other relevant officials,” he assured.

President Ruto mentioned that additional measures will be announced in due course.

The dismissed Cabinet Secretaries had been in office for barely two years. In October 2023, Ruto had announced a reshuffle that affected at least eight ministries.
