Rescue operations at the site of a building collapse in Tanzania’s commercial hub, Dar es Salaam, entered their third day on Monday, following the tragedy that claimed at least 16 lives. Efforts are ongoing to locate more survivors, although the exact number of people trapped remains unclear. Several residents have reported losing contact with relatives they believe were inside the building when it collapsed.
Some victims were laid to rest on Monday, while Tanzanian Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa attended the funerals and assured the public that rescue operations would continue around the clock until all individuals are accounted for.
The collapse occurred on Saturday morning, bringing down a four-story building that housed multiple shops. More than 80 people have been rescued so far, though emergency responders are still working to extricate anyone who might be trapped.
In response to the incident, President Samia Suluhu has ordered a comprehensive audit of buildings in Dar es Salaam’s bustling Kariakoo district, home to many traders. Authorities are also investigating the building’s ownership and construction permits. The collapse has drawn attention to the region’s frequent building failures, particularly during the rainy season, when such incidents are unfortunately not uncommon.
