The leader of South Africa’s Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) announced that the party will join a government of national unity alongside the African National Congress (ANC) and the Democratic Alliance (DA). Velenkosini Hlabisa, speaking in Durban, emphasized that the IFP would maintain its identity despite this coalition. The move comes after the ANC lost its majority in recent elections, marking a historic shift as they seek coalition partners. The new parliament is set to elect a president on Friday, with the ANC pushing for Cyril Ramaphosa to continue as leader. The ANC’s preference for a coalition with the DA aligns with the business community’s interests, contrasting with the more radical Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and MK party.
