MTN Group has confirmed a cybersecurity incident affecting its operations, though the company assured that its platforms remain fully functional and customer services continue uninterrupted.

In a media release issued on April 28, MTN stated that preliminary investigations indicate data belonging to approximately 5,700 customers in Ghana may have been compromised. The company said it will contact affected individuals directly.

“We are working closely with leading cybersecurity experts and conducting a forensic investigation in line with our established security protocols,” the statement read. “The confidentiality, integrity, and availability of our systems remain central to how we operate and serve our customers.”

MTN has not yet determined the full extent of the breach but emphasized that efforts are ongoing to resolve the matter. The company urged customers to stay vigilant and take precautions, including placing fraud alerts on credit reports, updating apps and devices, using strong passwords, avoiding suspicious links, and enabling multifactor authentication.

MTN also reminded users not to share sensitive information such as passwords, PINs, or one-time passwords via phone calls, text messages, or emails.

“MTN assures its customers that the privacy of information is our top priority, and we remain committed to safeguarding the trust placed in us,” the company stated.

Customers seeking further information have been advised to contact MTN’s toll-free customer care number, 100.

MTN Ghana is a subsidiary of the MTN Group, a leading telecom operator across emerging markets. The company is listed on the Ghana Stock Exchange and is currently pursuing its “Ambition 2025” strategy aimed at delivering digital solutions for Africa’s progress.
