GPRTU Announces 15% Reduction in Transport Fares, Effective May 25

Accra, Ghana – The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has announced a 15% reduction in transport fares, set to take effect on Saturday, May 25, 2025. The decision comes in response to a significant drop in fuel prices and follows a high-level meeting between the Union’s National Executive and the Minister of Transport.

The fare reduction was confirmed by Abbas Ibrahim Moro, Public Relations Officer of the GPRTU, in an interview with 3news.

According to the Union, the adjustment is a direct reaction to an 18% drop in fuel prices across the country. While the GPRTU traditionally implements fare changes based on one-third of any fuel price variation, Moro explained that the Union had opted for a more generous 15% cut to ease the financial pressure on commuters.

“We normally use one-third of the fuel price reduction to adjust fares, but we opted for 15% this time to reflect the fuel price trend. We also expect our counterparts in the spare parts industry to follow suit and reduce their prices,” he added.

Moro emphasized that the fare cut was made without waiting for reductions in other cost components, such as maintenance and spare parts, highlighting the Union’s commitment to public relief amid economic challenges.

He also issued a stern warning to GPRTU members who may attempt to defy the directive, insisting that compliance is mandatory.

The announcement has been met with cautious optimism by commuters and transport industry observers, who hope it signals a broader trend of cost relief in the face of Ghana’s fluctuating fuel market.
