Cable Car System Unveiled in Madagascar’s Capital to Reduce Congestion

The Malagasy capital, Antananarivo, has introduced its first cable car system, expected to carry up to 75,000 passengers daily and alleviate the city’s severe traffic congestion. President Andriy Rajoelina, along with city officials and project contractors, took part in the inaugural ride.

Funded by a 152 million Euro loan from France, the 12-kilometer system aims to replace numerous bus trips and cars, contributing to carbon savings and improved mobility. Safety sensors and backup generators are in place to address potential issues.

However, concerns over the high ticket price, which is nearly six times that of a bus fare, and unresolved basic infrastructure issues like water and electricity have sparked local criticism. President Rajoelina defended the project, comparing it to the Eiffel Tower in terms of future benefits. Public use is scheduled to begin in 2025, with planned subsidies for students and pensioners.
